It is a very exciting time of year due to the fact we have many activities that are wrapping up and just beginning. One quick item that I wanted to address is the new format for District basketball.
Last year, the NSAA membership voted to change the way that schools will qualify for the NSAA State Championships in the sports of volleyball, girls basketball, and boys basketball. This method was adopted earlier in the larger classes, and now is being used in Class D1 and D2.
Prior to this year, to qualify for the State Tournament in the sports mentioned above in Class D1 and D2, you played out Sub-Districts, and then you were matched up with your neighboring Sub-District for the District Final. The winner of that game would advance to the State Tournament. Also, two teams that did not win their Districts, would advance based on their wildcard average.
With the new system that is in place, we are still playing our Sub-Districts as normal, based on geographical location of the schools. The change is now with the District Final format and advancing to the State Tournament. There will be 12 Sub-District winners that will advance to the District Finals. In addition to those 12 teams, the next four non-Sub-District winners with the highest wildcard point average will also advance to the District Finals, giving us a total of 16 teams. District finals will then be matched up based on their wildcard average where #1 will play #16, #2 vs. #15, #3 vs. #14, #4 vs. #13, #5 vs. #12, #6 vs. #11, #7 vs. #10, and #8 vs. #9. This seeding is statewide and is not based on the schools geographic location. The location of these games will be placed as centrally located between the two schools as possible.
In addition, there will be no wildcard teams that will advance to the State Tournament. A school must win their District Final game in order to qualify for the State Tournament.
This year, the Girls Basketball District Final will be played on Friday, February 22. The Boys District Final will be played on Saturday, February 23.
If you have any questions regarding the new format for volleyball, girls basketball, and boys basketball, and the qualification to the State Tournament, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.
Thanks again for all of your support of our students! It is truly amazing to see how involved all of our students are in the extra-curricular activities that we offer, which all begins with the support of our community.
